Position Title: Member of the Board of Directors
Length of Term: Two years
Reports To: Entire Board of Directors
About The Nava Center Board of Directors:
The Nava Center is committed to building a diverse and inclusive Board of Directors and organization, and we especially encourage residents from underrepresented populations to apply: Black, Indigenous & People of Color, renters, parents of school-age children, immigrants, women, older adults, people with disabilities, and people with low income.
The Board is legally and ethically responsible for all activities of the organization. To that end it:
Determines how the organization will carry out its mission through long and short-range planning
Adopts an annual budget and provides fiscal oversight
Recruits, orients, and develops board members
Hires and evaluates the performance of the executive director
Evaluates its performance and overall performance of the organization in achieving the mission
Establishes policies for the effective management of the organization
Expectations:
Understand and promote the organization’s mission to provide psychotherapy and training to the community, organizations, and individuals to decrease the impact of trauma and increase engagement in anti-racism.
Serve as an advocate and ambassador for the organization.
Be familiar with the organization’s programs, policies, operations, and decisions.
Attend board meetings and appropriate committee meetings.
Actively serve on at least one committee and offer to take on special assignments. Current committees include Fundraising, Grants, and Operations.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in all aspects of life.
Review agenda and supporting documents prior to meetings.
Respond in a timely fashion to regular emails and communications.
Fiduciary Responsibility: Make a personally meaningful donation.
Participate in fundraising activities.
Disclose conflicts of interest and maintain confidentiality.
Time Demands (approximate):
Attend and actively participate in monthly board meetings (currently 730p-9pEST on the third Thursday of each month)
Attend and actively participate in committee meetings and related work (typically one-hour meetings either once per month or every other month and related work)
Attend new board member orientation (approx. 2 hours)
Ideal Candidates Will Have:
Willingness to serve and engage in building up this new-ish organization.
Commitment to our mission, vision, and values.
Strong network.
Volunteer or professional experience in grant writing, law, finance, fundraising, community development, community planning, community organizing/advocacy, non-profit management, or local government.
Board Election Process:
The Nava Center’s Board is comprised of 8-10 individuals with varied experiences each of whom serve two-year terms.
Prospective members meet with the Board Director and then with at least two other Board members as a second interview. All interviews are presented to the Board at the following month’s meeting and discussed. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month.
A ballot is held to vote whether a new member is added.
No personal information will be shared.
Elected Board Members may begin their term at the next month’s Board meeting.
